Green Time TV, July 2014: Protecting the Earth

on Wed, 06/18/2014 - 9:49am

It’s time to enjoy the Earth while protecting it from those forces that threaten it.  July episodes of Green Time TV look at both the positive actions that environmentalists are taking and exactly what the Earth is.

Solar panels are popping up all over.  Would solar energy make sense for you?  During the first July Green Time show, host John Hickey and guests Joan Bray and Mark Kalk discuss what it’s like to have solar panels on their homes.  They cover what motivated them to go solar, if their example influenced others, and whether state government is doing enough to promote solar.  The episode touches on jobs created for solar installers.

The year 2014 marks the 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act.  The second July Green Time episode explores why this law is important for protecting our country’s environment.  Host Don Fitz and guests Toni Armstrong and Richard Spener ask what qualifies an area as wilderness?  Is hunting and fishing allowed?  The guests tell us about some of their favorite wilderness areas in Missouri and what viewers can do to find out about them and visit them.

Without dirt, there would be a lot fewer plants, people and other animals on Planet Earth.  Though it is the lifeblood of our existence, dirt is under attack. The third show focuses on what soil is and its interconnectedness with humanity.  Teresa Morris and Sarah Heyman review a healthy balance of physical, chemical, and biological components of soil.  They ask: What does it mean to say that the structure of soil is crushed?  How does water move through soil?  What kind of food do microorganisms need?

What would happen if all the dirt were to blow away?  That may not be too far off from what is happening.  During the final show, Sarah Heyman and Teresa Morris address how adding chemicals for crop yields deplete physical and biological potentials.  Why does resource extraction deplete the mineral portion of soil? How do concrete and asphalt interfere with soil?

July Green Time shows include the movies “The Cost of Coal 101: Overview,” “My Generation: Solar Installation,” “The Sierra Club: About Us,” “America’s Wilderness,” “Wilderness Act 50th: What does wilderness mean to you?” and “DIRT! The Movie.”

Green Time appears at noon on Saturdays in St. Louis on Channel 24-1 and at 8 pm on Mondays in St. Louis on Channel 24-2, Springfield on Channel 39, Joplin on Channel 36 and Marshfield on Channel 17.  July Green Time programs air on these dates:
