Green Time TV, June 2014: Doing the Right Thing

on Tue, 05/13/2014 - 9:45pm

What does “Doing the right thing” mean?  It includes, but goes beyond, taking responsible individual action.  “Doing the right thing” includes being part of an organization that takes collective, effective action.  June episodes of Green Time TV explore issues which beg for individual work as part of a group effort.

The first June Green Time show puts the “Right to Farm” proposal under the microscope.  Its name suggests that Missourians do not now have the right to farm but that the proposed constitutional amendment would give it to them.  Wes Shoemyer, of Missouri’s Food for America, explains that Missouri law already guarantees rights to family farmers; but the so-called “Right to Farm” would extend these rights to corporations.  That could give advantages to CAFOs (confined animal feeding operations) and huge corporations that are not even headquartered in Missouri.

Did you know that America still practices horse slaughtering?  A little bizarre, since virtually no one eats horse meat in this country.  For the second Green Time episode in June Bonnie Boime, of St. Louis Animal Rights Team (START), explains that horse slaughtering can ruin the environment and economy of a town where a plant is located.  Do laws truly require the humane slaughter of horses?  How many jobs are really created?  How we can protect horses and communities from the practice?

Did you ever wonder why the government is always broke when it comes to financing education, Social Security and Medicare but there is plenty of money to bail out banks and fight wars?  During the third June show, Fredric Raines, of the Washington University Department of Economics, and Rev. Elston K. McCowan, of Star Grace Missionary Baptist Church, discuss making federal and local money available for environmental and social justice needs.

The final episode features Eleeahsah Ben Israel, of the Hebrew Israelites, and Christine Jackson, of Healthy Effective Alternatives to Live, discussing self-destructive eating and drinking habits and changes that people could make.  They ask if it could be harmful to eat meat from animals that know they are about to be killed.

June Green Time shows include the movies “A Better Way to Farm” with Dr. John Ikerd, “Horse Slaughter,” “Horse Dallas Crown,” “The Story of Broke” and “Food Fight.”

Green Time appears at noon on Saturdays in St. Louis on Channel 24-1 and at 8 pm on Mondays in St. Louis on Channel 24-2, Springfield on Channel 39, Joplin on Channel 36 and Marshfield on Channel 17.  June Green Time programs air on these dates:
