Green Time TV, Sept 2017: Shaping Up

on Wed, 08/23/2017 - 4:45pm

by Don Fitz

September 2017 Green Time episodes say it's time to shape up on a personal level, shape up environmental problems, and shape up social systems so we can confront individual and environmental issues.

Why would energy efficiency building codes be important? In the first September Green Time, host John Hickey and guests Emily Andrews, of the US Green Building Council, and Jim Trout, of the Jefferson-Franklin Community Action Corporation explain that these codes can actually help reduce the foreclosure rate. Building professionals support strong energy codes. If county municipalities would adopt Missouri's 2015 energy codes, homeowners would see a savings. This is especially true for renters in multi-family buildings who would have lower utility bills. Unfortunately, big money interests are trying to sabotage the energy efficiency section of the code.

Research shows health benefits of Eastern methods of body healing exercises, especially when integrated with physical therapy techniques. During the second September Green Time, host Don Fitz and guests Shawn Tucker, of Brentwood Center of Health, and Tai Chi instructor LeShea Agnew tell how they heard about Tai Chi and what got them interested. Oppressed communities are plagued by racism, poor diet, limited medical care, crime and unemployment, which elevate stress levels and use of drugs and alcohol. Tai Chi and Qi Gong offer alternative paths to stress reduction in these communities.

What are “public variety” seeds and why are they getting harder for farmers to find? The third SeptemberGreen Time features host Don Fitz and guest Roger Allison of the Missouri Rural Crisis Center (MRCC) discussing how that organization addresses problems faced by Missouri farmers. They look at what “food sovereignty” means for local farmers and people throughout the world. The globalization of food production is strongly linked to the industrialization of agriculture.

What is wrong with agreements that do not allow prisoners to discuss a legal settlement? The fourth September Green Time has host Don Fitz and guests Randall Cahill, of Cahill Partnership, and Angelika Mueller-Rowry, of Missouri CURE, exploring medical negligence, malpractice and delayed diagnosis in Missouri prisons. How does the Prison Rape Elimination Act aim to address vulnerability? What problems could arise from prisoners' being largely black while guards are overwhelmingly white?

In the final Green Time, host Don Fitz and guests Michael McPhearson, of Veterans For Peace, and Kennedy Davis, of Veteran Court Technology Clinic, explore difficulties in returning to the civilian world, adjusting to families, getting an education, and finding and keeping a job. These can be intensified by drug addiction, alcoholism, traumatic brain injury or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Do vets with PTSD have a “disorder” or is stress a normal reaction to involvement in people's deaths?
